The energy system of the future is fossil-free, decentralised and based on multiple energy sources, production units and flexible resources. Offshore wind power is one of the critical factors in meeting the growing demand for competitively priced renewable electricity.

Clean and renewable energy

  • Out at sea, solid and stable winds move unhindered.
  • Turbines are increasingly powerful, and there are well-developed methods to minimise environmental impact.
  • The distance to people and buildings is long, so potential disturbance effects are minimal.
  • Wind power has low carbon emissions compared to other energy sources, and the industry is rapidly evolving to minimise its climate and environmental impact further.
  • The recycling rate for wind turbines is already over 80 per cent and is increasing all the time thanks to demand, need and, not least, stricter requirements.

Now is the time to act

  • The demand for renewable electricity is growing – in Finland, electrification is estimated to double our energy needs by 2050.
  • The industry is moving forward rapidly. We need to act quickly to secure local and domestic expertise and capture a share of the offshore wind market.
  • The security situation has drastically increased the need to secure Finland’s green energy production and reduce dependence on imported electricity.
  • The Nordic countries and Europe also need to become more self-sufficient in energy.
  • The technology is already well advanced, and the wind power industry is ready to act and respond to society’s needs. Currently, authorisation processes often take too long and hamper the development of the industry and supply chains.

Åland and Finland can lead the way

  • We have large sea areas with very favourable wind conditions and relatively low water depth.
  • The framework is still largely open and we can still ensure that offshore wind power actually contributes to local and domestic competitiveness, employment and security of supply.
  • We have very well-functioning environmental legislation and can rely on the environmental impact assessment process to ensure that projects that are realised cause minimal harm.
  • Our decision-makers have a responsibility to ensure that Åland and Finland can capitalise on the spin-offs and socio-economic opportunities and prosper thanks to wind power.

When a large-scale project comes to a small place, growth inevitably occurs, especially when the project developers and investors have the will and intention to interact with the local community, and the local community is also on board. Possible revenue and income sources are:
